The Volunteer Guardian Program shares it now has 100 volunteers to help the seniors and special need populations in Summit County, Since the implementation in July 2014, olunteer Guardians are making a huge impact. The Volunteer Guardian Program is under the direction of Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer and based at Jewish Family Service of Akron, with Executive Director Gizelle Jones.
Jones said, "It's amazing that there are people making this type of commitment. Other programs of this nature are struggling to meet the needs of their population. I am pleased and excited that our community has shown so much compassion."
Volunteer Guardians advocate on behalf of someone else to be sure they receive the care they deserve. As the population in Summit County ages, the need for this program will grow. Seniors and the special need populations don't always have someone to look out for them. Volunteers can be from Summit or any neighboring counties with the desire to make a difference. The minimum is four in person visits per year and you are matched with one person in a nursing facility or group home.
Volunteer Julie Deanne says, "Becoming a guardian is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life." Ongoing training, quarterly education events and personal support are provided. "Enjoy the best feeling of your life -- when you help someone," expressed Volunteer Guardian Mary Scudder.
"Our volunteers are very passionate about the work they are doing. I have never met a more caring, wonderful and dedicated group of individuals," said J.J. Mesko-Kimmich, Director of Volunteers. "We are thrilled to reach this goal, now we need to work on finding the next one hundred amazing individuals that will help change someone's life! Volunteers are always needed and we recruit, train and place daily."
