AKRON -- The Veterans Service Commission of Summit County (VSC) will host a free "Job Boot Camp" employment workshop June 3, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering attending veterans crucial advice and training to help prepare them for a successful employment search.
Later that week, veterans will have the chance to use their newly acquired skills as they meet with potential employers during the VSC's Veteran & Community Job and Career Fair, taking place June 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
"Veterans already make for some of the best-qualified job candidates on the market, and our Job Boot Camps aim to help veterans better demonstrate their value to potential employers," said David Burden, project manager, VSC. "By refining their hiring skills and processes, these veterans will be better equipped to explore new career opportunities during our upcoming Veteran & Community Job and Career Fair and into the future."
The free events will take place at the VSC's headquarters office, located at 1060 E. Waterloo Road in Akron.
Available to all veterans seeking employment opportunities or a career change, the Job Boot Camp aims to bring together local professionals to help veterans improve their chances of a successful job search by providing insight into employer needs and expectations.
Focuses will include resume analysis, interviewing training, soft skills assessment and dress-for-success tips.
Participants also are invited to take part in a power brunch training session.
Preregistration is required for the Job Boot Camp and is available online at www.VSCsummitOH.us or by calling 330-643-7636.
Attendees should come dressed in business or business casual attire and bring a copy of their DD-214 and resumes to hand out to employers offering advice and training on-site.
Public transportation is available through the Akron Metro bus No. 2, via the Arlington route. For a schedule, visit www.AkronMetro.org.
The Veteran & Community Job and Career Fair, free and open to all veterans and their dependents, will provide attendees with an opportunity to meet with representatives from local companies, as well as the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
During the event, participants will be coached on resume tips, job searching and interview skills. Professionals from the VSC also will be on-hand to discuss education opportunities, online career development courses and other free resources available to them through the agency.
Summit County veterans and their families also can connect with the VSC at Facebook.com/SummitCountyVSC and Twitter.com/VSCsummitOH.
