Parade, ceremony set for Memorial Day

Northfield VFW Post 6768 and American Legion Post 801 are hosting the annual Memorial Day Parade and services on May 29. The community is invited to participate, observe and enjoy the day.

"Last year, we made some change and never before received so many compliments for those change," says Gene Timbers, parade coordinator. "Thus, these rules implemented last year will remain and stay in place."

The day will start with Ceremonial Flag Raising at 8 a.m. at the VFW Post 8584, Olde Eight Road in Northfield Center. All are welcome to this and coffee and doughnuts will be available after the ceremony.

At 9 a.m., staging for the Parade will begin in the south parking lot of St. Barnabas Church. Step off of the parade is promptly at 10 a.m. and the parade route is north on Olde Eight Road from St. Barnabas to the Northfield-Macedonia Cemetery. Services will start at the cemetery at 11 a.m.. All are welcome to attend.

The guest speaker for the services at the cemetery is Lt. Colonel Ronald Smetana, Retired US Army.

"We want to honor our community and our country's fallen heroes and their families with the most respect we can," says Timbers.

Parade participants and attendees are asked to honor the rules of the day of observation. There will be no handing out of pamphlets or candy of any kind, no water cannons or water balloons.

"Every year we need to remember the reason we honor Memorial Day a day of memory for all those who have given the ultimate sacrifice of their lives to secure our freedoms to enjoy our way of life," adds Timbers.. " We will honor these sacrifices and their family's sacrifices - in a respectful manner."

The community is invited to the luncheon at the VFW Post 6768 immediately after the ceremonies have completed at Northfield-Macedonia Cemetery.
