Kaleidoscope 2012 will open Nov. 16 at Summit Artspace in downtown Akron, and will continue until Dec. 31. There will be a Meet the Artists opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 16. Presented by the Alliance for the Visual Arts (AVA), this show is open to all current members of the four member organizations of AVA: Akron Society of Artists, Artists of Rubber City, Cuyahoga Valley Art Center, and Women's Art League. Based on recent years, Kaleidoscope 2012 can be expected to display 75 to 85 works, representing as many area artists, ranging in style from objective realism to explorations of non-objective imagery. The jurors for this exhibition are Marina Mangubi and John P. Smolko. They will select the works to be displayed in the show and award prizes which will be announced at the opening reception. Mangubi, painter, printmaker and installation artist, is associate professor of painting and printmaking at the College of Wooster. Smolko, member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, spent 35 years as a teacher of art at Aurora High School. He is presently enjoying his life as a fulltime artist and continues to be recognized for his unique colored pencil style. James Marron, an accomplished guitarist/composer will be performing at Summit Artspace's second floor event space at 8 p.m. following the exhibition reception. He will perform works by South American masters Antonio Lauro and Jorge Morel as well as original works, including his own signature version of John Dowland's "If My Complaints Could Passions Move" that slowly transforms the renaissance lute song into a modern day blues tune. Regular gallery hours are Thursday from noon to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission and parking are free. The exhibition will be open Dec. 1 from noon to 9 p.m. for the Downtown Akron Artwalk. Summit Artspace is at 140 E. Market St. For details, visit www.akronareaarts.org.
