Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Gilson today announced Cuyahoga County suffered at least 46 confirmed fatal overdoses in January due to heroin, fentanyl, or a combination of the two. Furthermore, 11 January cases are still pending further toxicology testing, which may cause the total to increase. At least 517 victims have died in 2016 from heroin, fentanyl, or a combination of the two.

Since Feb. 1, there have been at least 24 fatalities. Over the weekend (February 3 – 5), at least 14 suspected fatal overdoses occurred.

Additionally, January also suffered 31 cocaine-related deaths, with 19 being mixed with heroin, fentanyl, or a combination of the two. Cocaine deaths are projected to have doubled from 115 to approximately 230 in 2016.
