Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, in Macedonia, will begin the year-long celebration of its 50th anniversary year on Oct. 8. Starting with a Mass and reception, plans for the anniversary year will not only include events for spiritual growth, but many events will be just for fun and socializing.
The parish was formally established in the Cleveland Catholic Diocese on Oct. 7, 1967, with the Rev. Lloyd Boymer as the founding pastor. The final dedication of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in the completed building was exactly two years later on Oct. 7, 1969.
From the time it was established until now, OLG has grown so much that the original building has undergone changes three times -- with two additions to the building. OLG serves families in Macedonia, Twinsburg and the Nordonia Hills School District.
The current pastor, the Rev. Kevin Shemuga, the 50th Anniversary Committee and other parish committees involved in different events extend a special invitation to the parish's founding members and their families to attend as many events as possible.
During the anniversary year, current and past members of the church, along with the community at large, are invited to attend all events that are planned. Just a few events on the agenda include a movie and bonfire night on the parish grounds, a night at the races, a family bowling Sunday, Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast Day Mass and Fiesta, a family dance night, an Easter celebration brunch, OLG Softball Game and Picnic, a day of reflection, as well as speaker events throughout the year.
