NORTHFIELD VILLAGE -- The village approved a pay raise for Finance Director Tricia Ingrassia in which Mayor Jesse Nehez broke a 3-3 Council deadlock.

Ingrassia's salary increases from $58,000 to $68,000 following the Dec. 28 vote and retroactively went into effect Dec. 1.

In addition, Ingrassia serves as clerk of council and human resources manager.

Voting in favor of the pay raise were Councilors Renell Noack, Nick Magistrelli and Jenn Domzalski.

"For her duties and performance, she needed to be brought up to a higher pay level," Domzalski said.

Voting against the pay raise were Councilors Alan Hipps, Jim Daugherty and Gary Vojtush.

"I was not voting against her performance at all," Hipps said, adding he didn't agree with the proposed salary.

Nehez wrote in a Nov. 30 letter to Councilors that he believes the "positive changes" Ingrassia has made in the finance department are "very evident."

"I believe her 16 years of experience in municipal finance and the positive changes she has implemented for the village warrant a salary increase," he wrote, adding it would bring her pay to what past village finance directors would be making.

Nehez wrote that Ingrassia has "implemented many and new positive changes," such as correcting financial issues leftover from former finance directors and implementing a new financial software system.

At the Dec. 14 meeting, the village's full-time and part-time firefighters received raises along with a pay increase for the village law director. All raises were unanimously approved by Council. The pay increases go into effect Jan. 1.

Law Director Brad Bryan's general retainer total will increase from $30,722 a year to $31,644 annually while his hourly rate will increase from $119 an hour to $122 an hour, according to a Council document.
