A celebration of life memorial service is planned for May 4 to honor Sarah Jane Bush, the Nordonia High School freshman who died April 27.

She was the daughter of John and Wendy Bush.

Sarah, 14, was diagnosed with type B leukemia, the most common type, March 23 and subsequently spent four weeks in the hospital, according to a Facebook group page meant to document Sarah's journey. On March 24 Sarah started chemotherapy for what was expected to be 3-5 year journey, with the initial course of treatment being 6-7 months long. The 6-month plan was to be broken up into four different sections as part of a standard treatment program.

However, on April 24, doctors told the family Sarah was in complete remission, but that night her lungs and heart started to give up. Three days later, she lost the battle with her illness.

Superintendent Dr. Joe Clark sent out an email April 27 reporting Sarah's passing and said additional counselors would be available for Nordonia High School students for as long as necessary.

"We are all saddened by this loss and our deepest sympathies go out to those friends, relatives and classmates left behind," Clark wrote.

Nordonia High School Principal Casey Wright said the loss was "shocking" for the student body and Sarah will not be forgotten.

"We will always remember her smile when she performed with the choir," Wright said. "Sarah's loss is devastating to our student body and I can definitely tell that by talking to students. Sarah certainly will be missed."

Sarah was even remembered by NASCAR driver Reed Sorenson, who placed a decal on his race car for the April 30 race in Richmond, Va. Fox Sports announcer Mike Joy announced the loss of Sarah and the special decal tribute during the Sunday broadcast. There is also a tribute to her posted on Premium Motorsports website.

The celebration of life will be held at the Christ Community Chapel, 750 West Streetsboro St. in Hudson.

Visitation with pictures and mementos will be from 4-6 p.m. A memorial service conducted by Tom Randall will start promptly at 6 p.m. Immediately following the service will be a reception with light snacks and an opportunity to share your best stories about Sarah with the group.

Dress is casual. In order to honor Sarah, family and friends will be wearing the "I wear Orange for Sarah" T-Shirts and since there has been numerous requests for additional shirts, a limited amount will be available for purchase at the memorial.

After the service a picture is being planned with anyone with the Sarah shirt, or an orange shirt.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to The Humane Society of Summit County, where Sarah volunteered to help pets needing adoptions, at 7996 Darrow Road, Twinsburg 44087 or The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society 5700 Brecksville Road, Independence 44131.
