The Nordonia High School softball team hosted its annual awards banquet recently, and eight Knights received Northeast Ohio Conference (NOC) Scholar-Athlete Awards.

Those eight were as follows: Michelle Bascombe, Ashley Collins, Amanda Hatfield, Sarah Knepper, Rachael Mong, Allison Ross, Jessica Russo and Kelsey Shirey.

In addition, four Nordonia players were named first-team All-NOC. Those four were Knepper, Emma Shirey, Stef Misciagna and Ross.

Two Knights also earned honorable mention recognition within the conference. They were Mong and Shirey.

Nordonia passed out four special awards at the banquet, as well.

Among them was the most improved player award, which went to Shirey. The offensive excellence Award was presented to Misciagna.

The defensive excellence award, on the other hand, was shared by two players- Kelsey Shirey and Ross.

Knepper was the recipient of the most valuable player award.

According to Nordonia head coach Jack Gore, Knepper's statistics weren't overwhelmingly phenomenal during the season, but she was definitely the most consistent producer on the Knights' roster, as well as a team leader.

The Nordonia coaching staff tracks the players' production in 27 categories. Two of those pertain to pitching and catching.

Knepper is in the top six in 21 of the remaining 25 categories. For example, she had four game-winning RBIs, notched 58 assists, had the third-highest fielding percentage at .961 and committed just four errors while playing third base.

In addition, Gore said Knepper played through pain toward the end of the season. She was suffering from a nagging shoulder injury, but didn't tell anybody until after the last game had been completed.
