Gov. Ted Strickland, who has reportedly threatened to veto an "English Only" bill in the Ohio Legislature, has stated such a bill would be interpreted as a hostile gesture and discourage foreign investment in our state. As a retired manager in the private sector, I have news for him. Business doesn't care what language is spoken in areas where they may wish to invest. Examples abound where American businesses invested in Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China, Mexico, Indonesia and so on. Do you really think that a "local language only" law in those countries would have discouraged U.S. investment? Investment decisions in my world are made primarily on cost factors. Secondly, the business environment at the new location is considered. The "English only" factor is an insignificant issue at the end of the list. It is hard to understand why Strickland feels that the "English only" provision is such a significant factor in bringing business to Ohio. Perhaps a course in Business 101 might be appropriate. We went through the same rain dance with former Gov. George Voinovich -- except Voinovich had a different reason for threatening a veto. I recall he felt making English the official language for Ohio would be "divisive." If we have really lost our national will and are not prepared to declare: "We are Americans and the official language here is English," God help us all. Leslie M.
