Fifth annual charity
The non-profit Swing into Action is hosting its fifth annual charity golf outing for Cleveland Catholic missionaries serving in El Salvador. It will be at Gleneagles Golf Course in Twinsburg Aug. 8 with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $90 per golfer and includes a continental breakfast, lunch, dinner by Blue Canyon Restaurant, beverages and prizes. The event will also feature auctions, skins games and other games of chance. This year, the proceeds will be used to equip a very meager medical clinic with some basic medical and office supplies, such as infant and adult scales, a dehumidifier, paint, a laptop computer, file cabinets and other office supplies. Members of St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Northfield will personally take the supplies to the clinic on their first mission trip to El Salvador in January 2009. The group of 10 will gut the clinic, re-paint it and organize the medical files which are now resting in boxes on the dirt floor. Call 330-467-7959 for details. Methodists change worship schedule The worship schedule for the United Methodist Church of Macedonia has changed for the summer months through Aug. 31. Worship times will are as follows: Traditional Service is at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings; the contemporary service will temporarily move to 11 a.m. on Sundays. There will be no Saturday evening service through the summer months. The Saturday evening contemporary service will resume Sept. 6. The community is invited to experience the "Summer of Amazing Grace" during the contemporary service. This service is informal and features life-relevant themes and the music of the praise band "Five2Follow." Aug. 10 is '60s day with music themed from the 1960's. Aug. 17 will feature a Caribbean theme -- definitely a "Hawaiian shirt" day. Aug. 24 is "home grown" day, with music by Five2Follow. Join Destiny for
Destiny Church's annual Praise in the Park at Twinsburg Township Square will be Aug. 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. Bring the family to this free outdoor concert, which includes contemporary and soul worship music provided by Destiny Praise, free ice cream, games and activities. Bring a picnic basket and blanket for an evening of summer fun. Creationism discussed at Liberty Valley Guest speaker, Ron Nelson, visited Liberty Valley Church to reflect on creationism as opposed to evolution at the church's morning service on July 20. Nelson is a science teacher from Heritage Christian School in Cleveland, where he teaches college courses in Hebrew History and Biblical Creation. The congregation enjoyed his biblical knowledge regarding creation and, due to the positive response, he will be returning to the itinerary of guest speakers soon. Northfield Baptist
Northfield Baptist Church at 311 W. Aurora Road in Sagamore Hills announces the continuation of SummerFest 2008. SummerFest, a free Sunday evening series aimed at providing practical biblical instruction to help confront the top problems facing families today. Area residents are welcome to attend these informal 6 p.m. sessions which include a one-hour teaching session followed by food, fellowship and activities. SummerFest also includes special activities for children. Children's activities include Bible lessons, crafts, crazy science experiments, prizes and games. The following speakers and topics will be addressed: * Aug. 10 (pot luck night): "Reining in media madness" by the Rev. Eric Puff. * Aug. 24 (burger night): "Walking the tightrope of work and family" by Gary Hoffman. * Aug. 31 (spiedies night): "When is enough, (materialism)" by the Rev. Mark Ashley. Friend's Day, carnival come to Sanctuary The Sanctuary Of Praise International Ministries Inc., at 8788 Hadden Road in Twinsburg, has new hours of operation. They include a Sunday worship service at 9 a.m. and noon; a dynamic Christian education at 10:30 a.m.; and a Wednesday Bible study at noon and 7:30 p.m. The Sanctuary also asks the public to attend the Friend's Day Celebration, which will be Aug. 10, and Aug. 15 through 17. Events include: * On Aug. 10 at noon the first 25 visitors will receive a special gift. A Friend's Day Free Fellowship Dinner will be served in the fellowship hall immediately after worship service; * On Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. will be a free "Community Health Fair and Carnival." Health care professionals will give free health screenings and a "Talking PT Cruiser" will be sharing safety tips with children. An inflatable gym will be on-site for children. Everyone can enjoy food, fun, games and more. The highlight of the evening will be "The Battle of the Choirs" in the sanctuary, with celebrity judges voting for the best choir or soloist of the concert; * On Aug. 16 at 11 a.m. the free "Community Health Fair and Carnival" will continue until 10 p.m. A free back-to-school giveaway for students in kindergarten through 12th grade will begin at 3 p.m. To register for free school supplies call 330-655-6071 and provide a name of a parent or guardian, the school district, age, grade and gender of the student and a telephone number. While activities are being conducted outside, live performances will take place in the church throughout the day; and * On Aug. 17 at noon the first 25 visitors will receive a special gift. A special performance is planned during the service and a reception will follow. During the reception guests can refresh themselves with fellowship as well as meet with Bishop and First Lady Smith. Reformers Unanimous, a national Christ-centered addiction program headquartered in Rockford, Ill, has started a chapter in Northfield. The program meets every Friday night at the New Testament Baptist Church from 7 to 9 p.m. The program is open to all adults who struggle with an addiction or a "stubborn habit."
