Traffic backed up from Hines Hill Road to Highland Road in Macedonia Wednesday morning when the engine of a Krispy Kreme doughnut truck caught fire.
Patrolman Joe Kraynik, of the Boston Heights Police Department, said the vehicle, similar to a 1-ton box van, caught fire about 7:50 a.m. in the southbound lanes in the Route 8 construction zone south of Highland Road.
The driver was able to drive the vehicle to the end of the construction zone and pulled off to the side of the road about one-quarter mile south of Hines Hill Road, Kraynik said. The driver then got out of the truck and was uninjured.
By then, the engine was fully engulfed in flames and the Boston Heights Fire Department arrived to deal with the fire.
Smoke and burnt rubber in the roadway caused police to close the southbound lanes for about 20 minutes, Kraynik said, adding Macedonia police assisted with traffic control around the Highland Road area.
Kraynik said the truck was removed at about 9:15 a.m.
