by Jeff Saunders Reporter Northfield Center -- Even though the fire department is half a block away, help may soon be even closer at hand for heart attack victims at the Town Hall. The Board of Trustees unanimously approved the $2,065 purchase of an automatic electronic defibrillator for the hall, as well as the $5,187 purchase of two additional defibrillators for the fire department. The Board also approved funding for carbon monoxide detection equipment and for equipment maintenance, but put on hold approval of nearly $3,900 in contracts for repairs to the fire station's exterior. Fire Chief Robert Derrit said the two fire department defibrillators will replace "obsolete units" currently in use. He said the fire department will train Town Hall employees, including Township Administrator Sam Ciocco and Secretary Judy Flauto, in the use of the equipment. In addition to the defibrillators, the Board also approved the $3,995 purchase of a device to detect carbon monoxide levels in blood. Derrit said the cost will be reimbursed by a $4,500 emergency medical service grant the department will receive from the Ohio Department of Public Safety's Division of EMS. The Board also approved $1,500 in funding preventative maintenance, including periodic air-quality testing, of the compressor the department uses to fill air bottles. Trustees decided to look for bids to repair a drain and to repair and seal cracks in the fire station's parking lot. E-mail: jsaunders@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3169 Comments
