by Laura Freeman Reporter Boston Heights -- While the village met state requirements for financial reporting, it did not effectively maintain personnel records for some of its safety forces, according to the state auditor report. Steve Faulkner, deputy press secretary for State Auditor Mary Taylor, said the village's audit, which covered 2006 and 2007, identifies issues to alert the village so it can make improvements. "There are a few minor issues that need to be addressed," Faulkner said. The state auditor identified two "non-compliance citations," identifying several instances where the village kept incomplete personnel records for fire and emergency medical service employees. Some employee files were missing copies of EMS or firefighter certificates, copies of valid CPR cards or copies of valid drivers' license to operate city vehicles. For example, the audit reported 80 percent of the personnel files for fire and EMS employees did not have a copy of a valid driver's license, and 75 percent did not have a valid CPR certification card. Mayor Bill Goncy said the departments' are "looking into why the information wasn't in the files." "We are looking at the operation and trying to make sure we have the adequate paperwork that goes with the certification of the department," he said. Goncy said the village does not have the staff to handle the paperwork and is looking at combining some of its safety services in a regional program. "We're looking at combining operations as a way to move into better compliance," Goncy said. "The ultimate goals is to provide better service." Faulkner said the village will not be fined, but the citations will be reviewed in the next audit. "When [a problem] is identified in an audit report, we review it in future audits to see if they comply or improve the situation," Faulkner said.
