As vice president of Macedonia City Council, I would like to set the record straight. The mayor and finance director discussed the Girl Scouts moving to the city in the summer and presented plans to the planning commission for approval.

According to the Summit County Fiscal Office records, the building was purchased and title transferred on Sept. 18. The first time Council received any information the Macedonia Occupancy Program was being offered was Sept. 25 and Council immediately questioned giving a rebate on income taxes to a non-profit organization that would already be exempt from paying real estate taxes.

I think the situation with the Girl Scout organization is a result of the mayor's negotiations and promising a deal without discussing it with Council. I feel the mayor also asked the Girl Scout organization to attend the meeting on Oct. 23 knowing there were not enough votes to pass the legislation.

It is Council's job to oversee the spending of tax dollars on residents' behalf. There are so many worthwhile organizations like the Girl Scouts that deserve our help. However, I am aware of the tough economic times for many businesses and organizations in our city. Council has tried to control the spending to live within the budget. I am also aware, that sometimes, economic development activities and programs are necessary to encourage development and business in our community.

When the city abates taxes or authorizes a refund of taxes, someone must make up those revenues.

I believe that the residents would not like to pay more taxes so others can receive abatements or income tax refunds. I hope that residents understand my position on this legislation and know that I am working to keep the taxpayers' needs first.
