Macedonia -- Newell Rubbermaid has announced that it will lay off 135 workers at the Graco Children's Products plant on Valley View Road in Macedonia beginning in August and continuing through the end of the year. The Graco plant manufactures children's car seats.

Mayor Don Kuchta took an optimistic view of the news.

"The good news is there are going to be more than 100 jobs remaining. The good news is they're not leaving," he said. "The good news is that the assembly line is not going to be disassembled."

The company informed the city June 15 that the layoffs were part of a restructuring move involving its Mogadore and Macedonia facilities, which the company said have both been operating below capacity "in recent years."

"We have made a decision to focus our plastic molding operations in Mogadore, and focus the assembly of car seats in Macedonia. In addition, we will consolidate outside storage space back into Macedonia for product distribution," the company said in a June 11 release sent to the city June 15.

"We understand the impact these changes will have on affected employees, their families and the local community, and we explored other options before reaching this conclusion. Our focus now is on helping affected employees make the transition and find new employment," the company stated.

Company spokesperson Connie Bryant said the 135 workers staffed the Macedonia plant's injection molding operation. Under the restructuring plan, injection-molded car seat parts will now be manufactured in Mogadore and shipped to Macedonia for assembly by the remaining staff, Bryant said.

While the Macedonia plant will go from 310 to 175 employees, the Mogadore facility will remain at 580 workers, according to Bryant.
