Sagamore Hills -- A June 27 early morning fire destroyed the garage and kitchen of a North Boyden Road home and caused heavy smoke damage to the rest of the house.
Northfield Center Fire Capt. Frank Risko said the family of five, including three children age 11 and under, escaped unharmed. Firefighters rescued a pet dog, but a cat and rabbit were apparently killed. The family is staying with relatives, Risko said.
"We estimate the damage was about $125,000, both the structure and belongings," he said, adding that a van parked outside the garage was also destroyed.
Risko said that the origin of the fire was in the attached garage, but as of June 29, fire department and insurance company investigators had not established the cause.
Risko said the call came in at about 2:42 a.m. and township firefighters were on scene within three minutes.
"We got the fire under control about 40 minutes after arrival," he said.
Risko said the family was awakened by a smoke alarm and the father tried to extinguish the fire with a garden hose before the fire department was called. He said firefighters rescued the dog from a kennel attached to the rear of the house, but the rabbit was in a cage in the garage, where the family said they last saw the cat.
"We never found the cat or rabbit," said Risko. "There was no way the rabbit survived and if the cat was in the garage, there was no way he survived."
Risko said firefighters stayed at the home until about 7:30 a.m. to make sure the fire was out. In addition to 10 township firefighters, 29 firefighters from Macedonia, Northfield Village, Twinsburg, Boston Heights, Valley View and Brecksville also responded.
