Northfield Center -- Two township Trustees are defending their positions against a challenge by a former Board member.

Incumbents Paul Buescher and Brent Sommer are seeking another four years in office on the Nov. 3 ballot, but they are facing former Trustee Marc Pepera.

Buescher, 56, is running for a second term. Until his retirement two years ago, he worked as a project electrician in the automotive industry for 30 years and was an auxiliary police officer on Kelleys Island in Lake Erie for about two years in the early 1990s and for the last two years, has been a trustee with the Historical Society of Olde Northfield.

Buescher said that during his first term, the Board was successful on a number of fronts, including helping to stop a proposed soccer stadium project and developing a plan for fire and emergency medical service coverage on the east side of Route 8 while construction was taking place on the state route.

"We just want to keep a good thing going. The three of us work well together," said Buescher. "It's a good team, there are no outstanding issues."

Pepera, 54, served as Trustee from 2002 through 2005 and was Board chairman and vice chairman for two years each during that term. He is a "semi-retired" industrial chemist.

Pepera said that among other things, he wants to work on township financial record keeping issues, which he said is of fundamental importance to township operations; ensuring there is a regular annual road-paving program; and look into developing a low-cost senior snowplowing program.

"I get things done for the residents. The key is to get things done every year," said Pepera. "The Trustees have to be up on what's going on and they have to be straight with the residents."

Sommer, 53, is seeking a second consecutive term. He served a term as Trustee from 1997 through 2000 and at different times, was a member of the township's zoning commission for several years and its board of zoning appeals for nearly two years.

"The present Board has a reputation of working together to get the issues of the township resolved. We work well with our township employees and we work well with the surrounding communities," said Sommer, who added a comment directly to the residents.

"You may not always agree with the decisions I have made, but I have always tried to explain why I have made them" he said.
