by Jeff Saunders Reporter Northfield Village-- With no incumbent running for Village Council's Ward A slot, two challengers are fighting to take the seat when the new four-year term begins Dec. 1. Former Councilor Mark Apana is running against resident Karyn Selle for the spot. Current Ward A Councilor Brian Barber decided not to run for a second term. Ward B Councilor Jesse Nehez and Ward C Councilor Lennie Noack are running unopposed. With the Summit County Board of Elections disqualifying Ward D incumbent Councilor Chuck Lewis from the ballot, challenger John Bolek is in an uncontested race. Apana, 49, served on Council from 2001 to 2005 and served on Council's road and public works committee, as well as the at-large finance committee. He is manager of an automotive dealership's collision center in Medina. Apana said he will bring experience to the job, as well as commitment. "I still stayed involved with local issues that concerned our residents," Apana said. "My opponent is restricted as she has a conflict of interest with her husband being an employee of the village and would prevent her voting on legislation involving fire and safety committee issues. We need no restrictions when it comes to moving forward with our village." Selle, 36, is a project manager with an environmental consulting firm. Her husband Scott is a lieutenant with the village's fire department and she has been active with the department's firefighter's association for five years. "I will never forget who I work for, which is the residents of Ward A," Selle said. "I have a strong work ethic, proven problem solving skills and leadership abilities. I have years of experience with working with contractors and large budgets. I have been attending Council meetings since fall of last year, so I am familiar with current issues before Council." Selle said she believes the restrictions on what she can vote on will be minimal. "Of course I would abstain on matters of pay and any disciplinary action against him if that were to come up," Selle said. "I think that I should have a vote on any issue such as budgets, contracts with other municipalities, and purchasing equipment and apparatus. However, if elected, I will use the time between the election and Dec. 1 to work with the mayor, the law director and members of Council to create clear guidelines to follow. If elected, the residents of Ward A will not be without a voice when it comes to their fire department." E-mail: jsaunders@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3169 Comments
