Police News: Police find loaded gun, suspected drugs in car

Northfield Village -- A traffic stop resulted in two felony charges for a 19-year-old Cleveland man after police said they found a loaded handgun and suspected crack cocaine in the man's car Oct. 23.

According to Stow Municipal Court records, the man did not enter a plea to charges of carrying a concealed weapon without a permit and drug possession at his Oct. 23 arraignment.

The man pleaded not guilty to speeding and marijuana possession. The man was released from police custody on a personal bond Oct. 23 and the case was sent to a Summit County grand jury Oct. 29.

Police said they stopped the man on Route 8 at Houghton Road about 2:30 a.m. for speeding and searched his car after they smelled marijuana coming from it. Police said the found a 9 mm pistol loaded with seven rounds in the glove compartment and a plastic bag containing a small amount of suspected crack cocaine. Police said they also found a burnt marijuana cigarette.

Arrest warrants

Oct. 31. Man arrested on felony warrant: Police said that after stopping a 53-year-old Cleveland man on Route 8 about 9 a.m. for speeding, they discovered he was wanted by the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office for an alleged probation violation.

Police said the man had been convicted of two counts of grand theft and one count each of burglary and possession of criminal tools. Police took the man to Summit County Jail, where he was later picked up by the sheriff's office.

Oct. 31. Man wanted by Lyndhurst police: Police said that after stopping a vehicle on Route 8 about 1:10 a.m. for an equipment violation, they discovered passenger, a 32-year-old Cleveland man, was wanted by Lyndhurst police for allegedly failing to pay fines on a traffic charge. Police turned the man over to Lyndhurst police.

Oct. 30. Man wanted by mayor's court: Cleveland police reported they had in custody a 28-year-old Maple Heights man, wanted by the Northfield Village Mayor's Court for failing to pay fines on a driving without a license charge. The man was given a mayor's court date and released on a personal bond.

Property damage

Oct. 26. Paint sprayed on house, vehicles: A Vincent Avenue man reported someone sprayed green fluorescent paint on the front of his home and on his vehicle, boat and trailer while they were in his driveway during the night. Police did not have an estimate of the damage.

Open container

Nov. 5. Man stopped on interstate: Police charged a Medina County man, 37, with having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree misdemeanor, and speeding after they stopped him at about 8:10 p.m. Police said the man had an open can of beer, but did well on the field sobriety tests. Police issued a summons into Stow Municipal Court and released the man at the scene.

Arrest warrants

Nov. 4. Driver, passenger wanted: Police said that after stopping a vehicle on Route 82, they discovered that the driver and a passenger were each wanted on warrants.

Police said they stopped the vehicle at Golden Link Boulevard about 6:45 p.m. after determining that the driver, a 51-year-old Akron man, was driving under suspension. They then discovered that the man was wanted by Barberton police for driving under suspension and turned him over to them.

Police said they also discovered that a passenger, a 46-year-old Akron man, was wanted by Akron police on carrying a concealed weapon and criminal trespassing charges and he was turned over to Akron police.

Police said a second passenger, a 23-year-old Akron man, was cited with a minor misdemeanor after they discovered he had an open can of beer. The man was issued a summons into Stow Municipal Court and released at the scene.

Theft

Nov. 3. Woman leaves store with merchandise: An employee of a Route 82 store reported that a woman left the store with $32 in items, including baby food, a baby bottle, fruit juice and a candle. The employee said the woman left in a vehicle.

Harassment

Nov. 1. Woman reports hang-up calls: A township woman reported she had received numerous hang-up calls at her home since early October. According to a police report, at least some of the calls came from a Phoenix number. The Summit County Sheriff's Office said it is working with Phoenix police to investigate.
