Nordonia Hills -- The Nordonia Hills YMCA's transition from a membership to a program branch is just about complete, according to Lisa Gillota, the branch's Executive Director.

"We've removed all of our fitness equipment," Gillota said. "Most was absorbed by other branches in the [Akron Area YMCA] association."

Gillota said the branch is considered a program branch now because it only offers programs, such as summer day camp, child care, youth groups, karate classes baton twirling, gymnastics, and such fitness programs as Zumba, a latin-dance based exercise, Silver Sneakers for seniors, and aerobics.

Residents can still purchase memberships, which provides price breaks on program fees.

The transition began in October, when 42 cardio and strength training machines, plus miscellaneous other items, such as dumbbells, were removed.

"This allows us to focus on our core niche as a program branch," said Gillota.

Gillota said the transition has gone smoothly, with little or no impact to program attendance.

"Certainly, there was disappointment from members who were losing their workout home," she said. "But I only received a few complaints."

Gillota said in September that the move was made because the branch could not successfully compete with other area exercise facilities, such as the Macedonia Family Recreation Center on the opposite side of Route 82.

To attract a core group of members interested in exercise, Gillota said the branch would have had to update the seven-year-old equipment at a cost of at least $100,000, as well as expand its locker rooms and showers.
