Police News: Man accused of writing more than $600 in bad checks

Northfield Center -- The Summit County Sheriff's Office issued an arrest warrant for a 58-year-old Brecksville man Jan. 8 after an employee of a township animal hospital reported the man paid for $625 in services with fraudulent checks.

According to Stow Municipal Court records, the sheriff's office filed several fifth-degree felony charges against the man, including forgery, theft, and passing bad checks.

According to a police report, the employee alleged Jan. 5 that over a week's time in mid-December, the man gave the hospital three checks, which were later determined to have been written against a non-existent bank account.

Property damage

Jan. 10. Eggs thrown at house: A Foghorn Lane man reported someone threw five eggs at his home during the night, which caused unspecified damage to the home's siding and window shutters.

Domestic violence

Jan. 3. Brothers involved in incident: Police charged a 15-year-old township boy in Summit County Juvenile Court with first-degree misdemeanor domestic violence after the boy's mother reported he struck his younger brother in the head, then threatened the brother with further violence.

According to a police report, the brother was uninjured. The older boy was taken to the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center.

Theft

Jan. 5. Men accused of shoplifting: A North Bedford Road man, 19, and a Cleveland man, 18, pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor theft and receiving stolen property after an employee of a Macedonia Commons Boulevard store reported the men left the store the day before without paying for two sets of earrings and a pair of cosmetic eyeglasses, totaling $26 in value.

Police said they found the men in a nearby store a short time later. Police said they discovered one of the pair of earrings in the North Bedford man's pocket while the Cleveland man was wearing the other pair, and the glasses were found on a shelf near where they were standing.

The men were released from Macedonia City Jail on personal bonds Jan. 6.

Prowler

Jan. 3. Woman sees prowler by neighbor's vehicle: A North Bedford Road woman told police she looked out her window and saw someone wearing a large coat and ski mask wiping snow off the window of her neighbor's pickup truck window and looking into it at about 9 p.m.

The woman said she struck her window several times to frighten away the person, who ran through her back yard. Police said they followed some footprints in the snow, but soon lost them and believe the person left the area in a vehicle. Police said the neighbor verified nothing was missing from his truck, or from another vehicle also parked in the driveway. Both vehicles were unlocked, police said.

Unruliness

Jan. 2. Mother says son not following rules: Police say that in lieu of misdemeanor unruliness and marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession charges in Summit County Juvenile Court, they referred a 16-year-old boy to the city's juvenile diversion program after his mother reported the boy was refusing to follow rules and may be involved in drug use.

Police said that with the consent of the mother and the boy, they searched his room and found two plastic bags containing a small amount of marijuana, as well as a box of cigarette rolling papers.

Counterfeiting

Jan. 2. Business reports finding counterfeit bill: An assistant manager of a Macedonia Commons Boulevard business reported he found a counterfeit $10 bill among cash taken in during the day. Police said they took custody of the bill to turn it over to the U.S. Treasury Department.

Driving under suspension

Dec. 29. Woman stopped on Newport Drive: A Bonnie Road woman, 48, pleaded not guilty Dec. 30 to misdemeanor driving under suspension, marijuana possession and two counts of drug paraphernalia possession charges after police stopped her about 11 p.m. the night before.

Police said they found a small amount of marijuana and two drug pipes in the woman's vehicle. According to Stow Municipal Court records, the woman was released from Macedonia City Jail on a personal bond Dec. 30.

Property damage

Dec. 26. Eggs thrown at vehicle: A Park Ledge Drive man reported someone threw several eggs at his vehicle while it was in his driveway during the night. Police said the eggs may have damaged the vehicle's paint.
