Police News: Police probe case of stolen cat litter box worth $255

Macedonia -- Police are investigating a case of alleged theft after the manager of a Route 82 store reported someone fraudulently returned a $255 self-cleaning cat litter box for a refund.

The manager said Jan. 3 that after the man received his refund and left the store, the manager checked the store's inventory and determined one of the litter boxes was missing. The manager said he believes the man picked up the box in the store and used a receipt from the purchase of a similar item in early December.

Police said store security video showed the man entering the store empty handed.

Operating a vehicle
under the influence

Jan. 13. Man runs into snowbank: A Melody Lane man, 37, pleaded not guilty Jan. 15 to misdemeanor operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, refusing to take field sobriety tests, possessing drug paraphernalia, failure to control a vehicle, drug possession and weaving across marked lane lines, after police said they saw the man drive into a snowbank on Firestone Lane two days earlier.

Police said that after seeing the man weaving across the center lane line on Ledge Road about 1:30 a.m., they followed him onto Firestone Lane, where he drove into the snowbank. No injuries were reported.

Police said they smelled alcohol from the man's breath and his attention was unfocused. Police also said they found a drug pipe and about 1.7 grams of suspected marijuana in the man's vehicle.

According to Stow Municipal Court records, the man was released from Macedonia City Jail on a $500 bond Jan. 15.

Theft

Jan. 10. Woman caught with clothing: A 45-year-old Akron woman pleaded not guilty Jan. 11 to misdemeanor theft, driving under suspension and possession of criminal tools after police said the woman admitted to taking $103 in clothing from a Route 82 store the day before.

According to a police report, a store employee reported the woman left in a vehicle after she set off an alarm at the store's exit. Police said they stopped her car on Interstate 271. Police said the woman admitted to leaving the store with two pairs of jeans and a jacket in her handbag.

According to Stow Municipal Court records, the woman was released from Macedonia City Jail Jan. 11 on a personal bond.

Jan. 10. Purchases made with fraudulent check: A woman reported someone used a fraudulent check against her bank account to make $217 in purchases at a Route 82 store in December. The woman said she does not know how someone got her account information. Police said they are investigating.

Jan. 9. Girl charged with shoplifting: A 16-year-old Northfield Village girl was placed in the city's juvenile diversion program in lieu of a misdemeanor theft charge after an employee of a Macedonia Commons Boulevard store reported the girl left the store without paying for $36 in cosmetics. Police said the girl also turned over a $30 bra she stole. The girl was released to her mother.

Property damage

Jan. 16. Home struck by eggs: A Foghorn Lane man reported someone struck his home with eggs, causing unspecified damage to siding and shutters, and toilet papered trees in his front yard during the night.

Attempted burglary

Jan. 15. Business' front door damaged: An employee of an Olde Eight Road business reported someone damaged the business' front door and frame while apparently trying and failing to break in during the night. According to a police report, damages totaled $650. The Summit County Sheriff's Office says it is investigating.

Burglary

Jan. 11. Cash taken from business: An employee of a Route 82 business reported someone took a safe containing about $3,100 from an office after breaking in during the night.

According to a police report, a locked side exterior door, office door and closet door in the office, where the safe was stored, were forced open, causing unspecified damage. The Summit County Sheriff's Office says it is investigating.
