by Devan Matthews Correspondent The Nordonia High School girls basketball team is most definitely a battle-tested bunch. The Knights showed their toughness yet again Jan. 21, when they defeated North Royalton by the score of 56-47 at home. According to Nordonia head coach Gary Tipton, the Bears provided a considerable challenge for his squad. "It was an extremely hard-fought game," said Tipton. "They're in the upper division of the NEO, they're a tough team and they play a tough schedule. They're an extremely solid team with great size and a really good point guard. It was a game of momentum, and it swung both ways throughout the first three quarters." Nordonia trailed by eight points entering the fourth period. However, that's when the Knights turned on the jets, embarking upon a 21-4 run en route to their nine-point victory. Senior forward/center Danielle Zuercher led the way for Nordonia with a double-double. She scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. In addition, junior guard Courtney Cole tallied 15 points and dished out four assists. Junior point guard Kelsey Shirey and senior forward Ashley Puscian were also in double digits with 12 and 10 points, respectively. "Everybody played well, but those four players did an outstanding job, both offensively and defensively," said Tipton. With the victory, Nordonia improved to 12-3 overall on the season. The Knights are still undefeated in the Lake Division with a ledger of 5-0. Nordonia has another long break in its schedule. The Knights don't play again until Jan. 30 against division foe Parma on the road. "We'd really rather not have the break," said Tipton. "We'd rather play on Wednesday and Saturday and keep things on a normal keel. We have some momentum, and we'd like to keep it going." This is the second time this season that Nordonia has clashed with Parma. The Knights clipped the Redmen the first time around. "They're a young and improving team with a winning record," said Tipton. "We're playing at their place this time, so we're going to have to come out and play hard."
