by Devan Matthews Correspondent The Nordonia High School ice hockey team was in action recently, as the Knights won two of three contests. Nordonia beat Jonathan Alter in a shootout at the Anthony Wayne Tournament Jan. 17 at the University of Findlay. The game was tied 3-3 at the end of regulation play, and when neither squad was able to score during the five-minute overtime session, a shootout ensued. Senior defenseman Tommy Majkrzak scored the first shootout goal for the Knights, and then senior center Joey Kramp clinched the victory with his goal. On Jan. 23, Nordonia defeated Aurora by the score of 4-2 at The Pond. Kramp tallied two goals for the Knights, while junior winger Mike Rudin contributed the other two. "We were on an upward swing in that game," said Nordonia head coach Joe Kramp. "We played really well. The game was televised by Channel 9, too, which was great to see." On Jan. 24, the Knights dropped a 5-2 decision to Cleveland Heights at Gilmour Academy. "We played much better against them this time around," said coach Kramp. "They've got a very good goalie." The score was tied 1-1 after the first period, but penalties hurt Nordonia in the second period. The Knights committed four infractions, meaning they were short-handed for eight of the 12 minutes during the stanza. Nordonia pulled its goalie in the third period with the score 4-2, and Cleveland Heights scored an empty-net goal with two minutes remaining in the contest. Rudin accounted for both of the Knights' goals, while Kramp assisted on one of them. Unfortunately, Nordonia was without the services of junior defenseman Dominic Lupica, who fractured a vertebra in his neck against Alter. As a result, he'll be out of action for the rest of the season. "We wish him a speedy recovery," said coach Kramp. "If everything goes right, he'll be with us next year. It's a big loss for the team." Nordonia is now preparing for its round robin tournament this weekend at Gilmour Academy. The Knights will play Midview Jan. 29, Anthony Wayne in the morning Jan. 30, Bay Village that night and then Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League Blue North Division foe Mayfield Jan. 31. According to coach Kramp, his squad more than likely needs to win its final conference contest against Parma on Feb. 2, if the Knights wish to qualify for the Baron Cup playoffs, which begin Feb. 8.
