The Nordonia High School girls basketball team is the Northeast Ohio Conference Lake Division champion.

The Knights clinched the title with a convincing 67-50 victory over division foe Normandy on the road Feb. 10.

Normandy jumped to a lead against Nordonia, seizing a 15-13 advantage by the end of the opening quarter. However, the Knights outscored the Invaders the rest of the way.

Nordonia topped Normandy 14-10 in the second period, 15-10 in the third stanza and 25-15 during the fourth frame, finishing with a flourish.

Two players scored 17 points for the Knights. They were junior point guard Kelsey Shirey and junior guard Courtney Cole. Junior guard Tierra Lewis was also in double digits with 11 markers.

In addition, senior forward/center Danielle Zuercher tallied six points and senior forward Ashley Puscian, senior forward/center Jasmine Lee and senior forward/center Courtney Scott each accounted for four points. Adding two points apiece were sophomore guard/forward Kelsey Watroba and sophomore forward/center Sara Andrasik.

According to Nordonia head coach Gary Tipton, the Normandy game was very hotly contested.

"In the second half, they (the Invaders) came out and played a triangle zone defense to try to stop Kelsey Shirey and Danielle Zuercher," said Tipton. "But Courtney Cole picked up the slack and had a superb second half with 14 points.

With one game remaining in the regular season, Nordonia now sports an overall record of 16-3. The Knights are also still undefeated in division action with a ledger of 9-0.

Tonight, Nordonia will close out the regular campaign with a home game against division foe Valley Forge. It will be Senior Nights for the Knights.

If Nordonia knocks off the Patriots, the Knights will break the school record for best regular-season record. Last year's edition of the team finished with an overall mark of 16-4.

In addition, Nordonia would also set a school mark for the longest consecutive win streak with a victory over Valley Forge. The Knights have won 10 games in a row.

The Knights will open the playoffs Feb. 20 against Maple Heights. If they're victorious, they'll advance to clash with Solon Feb. 24.
