by Devan Matthews Correspondent The Nordonia High School ice hockey team won its last game of the regular season recently before dropping their Baron Cup playoff contest. The Knights knocked off Parma by the score of 6-4 at Ries Rink Feb. 2, thereby wrapping up the regular campaign. Senior center Joey Kramp recorded a hat trick for Nordonia, scoring three goals and also accounting for two assists. In addition, junior winger Mike Rudin tallied two goals and three assists and junior winger Michael Portman accounted for one goal. Nordonia jumped on the Redmen quickly, leading 3-0 in the first period. "We controlled the tempo and the game from the beginning," said Nordonia head coach Joe Kramp. "We beat them the first time we played them this season, but we were sluggish at the beginning of that game and had to come from behind. "We played well all the way through this time. Freshman Nick Danczak had a good performance in goal for us." Then Feb. 8, Nordonia clashed with Orange in the Baron Cup playoffs. The Knights led the Lions by the score of 2-0 early in the contest, but Orange roared back. The Lions eventually posted an 11-5 win. Joe Kramp led Nordonia offensively, scoring four goals this time, while Rudin contributed the Knights' fifth goal. "I don't know what happened there," said coach Kramp of the Orange game. "We just fell apart; we didn't have anything between the nets." On Feb. 16, Nordonia will compete in the first round of the state playoffs in Kent. The Knights' opponent will be Aurora, a team they beat twice during the regular season. "Hopefully, that will give us the upper hand this time around," said coach Kramp. "We need to play the way we did against Parma. If we can do that, we'll be okay." Game time Feb. 16 is scheduled for 6 p.m. If Nordonia is victorious, the Knights will advance to battle Walsh on Feb. 18. The hockey team also will host a "Skate with the Knights" fundraiser to support junior defensemen Dominic Lupica, who suffered fractured vertabrae earlier this season. The skate will be Feb. 21 from 6:10 to 8:10 p.m. at Gilmour Academy with a $5 cost. All proceeds will go to help with Lupica's medical expenses.
