The Nordonia High School boys and girls swimming teams enjoyed their most successful sectional meet in school history last weekend.

A number of Knights qualified for this week's Division I district meet.

For starters, senior Bre Horrigan and junior Sean Whittaker qualified in one-meter diving.

In addition, the girls' 200 freestyle relay unit did so, as well.

The members of that squad were sophomore Jamie Wlosowicz, freshman Emma Toaz, senior Savannah Collins and senior Jessie Moosbrugger. In addition to qualifying, the unit set a new school record with a time of 1:44.84.

More than one Nordonia school record was shattered at the sectional meet.

Wlosowicz set new school marks in not one, but two individual events, qualifying for the district meet in both of them. Those events were the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.48 and the 200 freestyle with an effort of 2:03.99.

Not to be outdone, Toaz duplicated the feat. She set new school records in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.13) and the 200 individual medley (2:24.91), advancing to districts in both of those events.

Rounding out the girls' performance was junior Carly Dean. She qualified for the district meet in the 100 fly with a time of 1:06.15.

On the boys' side, the 200 freestyle relay team turned in a time of 1:32.49. That effort qualified the unit for districts and also set a new school mark.

Comprising that record-breaking squad were senior Ryan Dengate, sophomore Christian Long, junior Sean Van Buskirk and junior Kamyar Sadegi.

Dengate also advanced to the district meet in two individual events. Those two events were the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.

According to head coach Claudio Costanzo, this is the biggest group of Nordonia swimmers to ever qualify for districts.

"The kids all worked really hard over the past several months," said Costanzo. "It's great to see that work pay off."

Despite how many Knights advanced, Costanzo indicated that more could have made the trip to the district competition.

"We could have easily had three to four more kids at this meet," he said. "We had a few kids miss by hundredths of a second. Those are going to be tough to deal with for a while because they affected some really hard-working kids."
