Letter: Says schools should get back to basics

Most people are willing to share the burden of educating their neighbor's children. However, they are willing to do so because they understand without a basic education, children will become adults who burden society. In other words, it is in everyone's self-interest for children to receive a basic education.

The problem is public schools have grown far beyond providing a basic education. I feel a basic education consists of reading, writing, mathematics, U.S. history and civics; not much more.

Beyond these basic requirements, I believe a child's education is no longer in the interest of everyone in the community. Therefore, it is wrong to ask the community to share the burden equally.

The parents of children currently attending school benefit far more from property tax dollars than citizens who do not have or no longer have children of school age.

As a parent of a child in the Nordonia school system, I am willing to ask my neighbor to help provide my child with a basic education and I am willing to return the favor.

However, any responsibility beyond that should fall squarely on my wife and myself.

Therefore, school funding and the allocation of those funds should change to reflect the unequal burden and responsibility.

Citizen's tax dollars should cover the cost of a basic education for the children in their community.

Those tax dollars should then go to the children's parents in the form of scholarships.

The scholarships should come with the autonomy that allows parents the freedom to send their children to any accredited school which they determine is in their child's best interest. If they wish for their child to get more then a basic education, they are free to pay the difference themselves.

This type of change will once again align the educating of children with the self-interest of everyone in the community.
