by Devan Matthews Correspondent Senior Breanne Horrigan is the first female athlete in the history of Nordonia High School to qualify for the state swimming and Diving Meet. She accomplished the feat by virtue of her performance at the district meet Feb. 18. Horrigan, whose event is one-meter diving, finished sixth at districts. As a result, she will compete Feb. 24 at the state meet at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. The Division I girls diving competition will begin at 2 p.m. Feb. 24. At districts, Horrigan finishe with an 11-dive scored of 379.4. Cuyahoga Falls' Haleigh Bartlett won the district title with a score of 454.8. According to Nordonia head coach Claudio Costanzo, Horrigan has made steady strides all throughout the season, culminating with her performance at the district competition. "I'm looking forward to taking Bre down to the state meet this week," said Costanzo. "She's worked really hard all season, and she really stepped it up after the [Northeast Ohio] Conference Meet. It's almost like she stepped it up to a whole new level." There were a number of other notable performances at the district meet for Nordonia. For starters, junior Carly Dean set a new school record in the 100 fly with a time of 1:04.46. Other school records were set by sophomore Jamie Wlosowicz and freshman Emma Toaz. Wlosowicz did so in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.13 seconds, while Toaz accomplished the feat in the 100 breaststroke with an effort of 1:11.41. In addition, the girls' 200 freestyle relay squad broke the school record in that event, posting a time of 1:43.72. The members of that unit were Wlosowicz, Toaz, senior Savannah Collins and senior Jessie Moosbrugger. As far as the Nordonia boys were concerned, senior Ryan Dengate posted a personal-best time of 1:04.57 in the 100 breaststroke. "It seemed like Ryan was stuck in the 1:08s forever," said Costanzo. "He went into it knowing it was his last swim and he was just going to have fun. It turned out to be fun for all of us." The boys' 200 freestyle relay unit also set a new school record at the district meet. That squad -- which contained Dengate, sophomore Christian Long, junior Sean Van Buskirk and junior Kamyar Sadegi -- finished with a time of 1:31.80. Costanzo was extremely pleased with the performance and effort of all of his athletes at districts. "We went into this meet with a lot of kids who never swam at this level," said Costanzo. "Outside of Dengate and Sadegi, nobody had any district experience. This was a great experience for our kids. We were very pleased with our results."
