by April Helms Special Products Editor About a dozen children, most of them girls and many of them donning pink tutus and other fancy finery, flocked to the Stow-Munroe Falls Library Feb. 13 to meet Fancy Nancy, from the popular children's series by author Jane O'Connor, with illustrations by Robin Preiss Glasser. A team of volunteers and dancers with the Cuyhoga Valley Youth Ballet presented an outreach program at the library, which included reading one of the "Fancy Nancy" stories, a game where children tried to remember some of the "fancier" words from the story and learned a dance. They also got to see Fancy Nancy (played that morning by Abby Kulwicki, 12, of Hudson) dance a number from the youth ballet company's upcoming performance of a ballet based on the story books. "I think the community needs to know it's not only a performance company, but part of its mission is education," said Kara Stewart of Reach Out And Dance, who taught those attending a simple dance during the program. "Education is key in any art form." Ballet information "Fancy Nancy," adapted for the stage by New York choreographer Francis Patrelle, comes to the Akron Civic Theatre March 13 at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m., and March 14 at 2:30 p.m. A reception for children is planned 30 minutes prior to each performance. Guests can come dressed like Fancy Nancy and meet composer Patrick Soluri, hear a special reading of a beloved Fancy Nancy tale, and receive a free gift. The performances will also include the reprise of James Sewell's Carnival of the Animals, a colorful ballet based on the world famous music by Camille Saint-Saens. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Akron Civic Theatre box office at 330-253-2488 or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Ticket prices are $10 for general seating and $25 for preferred seating. For details, call the CVYB information line at 330-996-1100. The Cuyahoga Valley Youth Ballet is a pre-professional ballet company for talented local dancers ages 8 through 18 based in Cuyahoga Falls.
