Record Publishing Co. is pleased to announce that four of our weekly newspapers were honored by the Ohio Newspaper Association at the 2010 Osman C. Hooper Newspaper Show in Columbus Feb. 11.
The Stow Sentry won third place in its division in original columns for "Front Row Seat," a column written by Associate Editor Mike Lesko.
The judges called Lesko's writing "very good, both wistful and reflective." They said his columns "paint a lovely picture of the past but connect those memories to life as it exists in the community today."
The Hudson Hub-Times won second place in its division in original columns for "Hammertyme," a column written by Editor Bill Hammerstrom. The judges said Hammerstrom's "writing skills are strong," and that he "looks outside himself for stories worth being told in the community."
The Hub also won second place in headline writing among all weekly newspapers. The judges called the headlines "smart," saying they "served to attract attention and invite readership."
The Cuyahoga Falls News-Press won second place in its division in news coverage, for the issues of Sept. 21, 2008, July 26, 2009 and Jan. 18, 2009. The judges called the News-Press "a great local paper," saying it is a "great mix of quality and quantity with the standards of politics, religion, sports and schools plus birthdays, bridge, clubs, community bands and youth ballets."
The Tallmadge Express won second place in its division for sports coverage, for the issues of Nov. 2, 2008, Nov. 16, 2008 and Nov. 23, 2008. The judges called the sports coverage "outstanding," saying "Frank Aceto is largely responsible for the paper's top finish," and that "he is a fine writer and produces very readable copy."
"I couldn't be more proud of our hard-working staffs," said Executive Editor Erica Peterson, a member of the ONA who picked up the awards in Columbus Feb. 11. "Getting such recognition from our peers is especially nice and speaks volumes about the quality newspapers we produce week in and week out."
