By Devan Matthews Correspondent Both the Nordonia High School boys and girls bowling teams competed at the Division I district tournament this past weekend, but neither squad was able to advance to the State Tournament. The boys team competed Feb. 27, at Hall of Fame Lanes in Canton. The Knights finished ninth in a field of 38 schools. The top six squads qualified for states in Chillicothe this coming weekend. Senior Bryce Postolka led the way for Nordonia with a 646 series. According to head coach Bob Glontz, the Knights dug themselves a hole that they couldn't get out of. "We really only had one weak Baker Game, and that was the first one, a 147," said Glontz. "After that, we had a 194, 204, 221, 205 and 220. We just couldn't get the big games together. We started out in 17th place after the first team game, and we worked ourselves back to ninth. "When you put yourself in a hole, it's tough to get out of it when there are that many other teams bowling. Only 45 pins separated first place from sixth place. Everything was close. We did finish better than anybody else in our conference, so that's a feather in our cap." The Nordonia girls competed in the district tournament Feb. 28, also at Hall of Fame Lanes in Canton. The girls didn't fare as well as the boys, though, finishing 17th overall in a field of 33 teams. Once again, the top six squads advanced to the State Tournament. Sophomore Rachel Novak paced the Knights with a 554 series. She posted games of 172, 208 and 174. "The girls had a rough day," said Glontz. "They had two team games in the 700s, and the Baker Games gave them some trouble. They started out okay, but then it was downhill from there." The Nordonia girls recorded a 184 and a 234 in their first two Baker Games. However, the subsequent scores were 150, 155, 137 and 144. According to Glontz, it was a tough tournament. The Knights had to bowl their best to advance to States, but they weren't able to accomplish that. "Give credit where credit is due," said Glontz. "You had to bowl well to get there (the state tournament). There were no two ways about it." E-mail: stowsports@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3113 Comments
