Glovers asked for no Hugo Boss at Oscars

Cleveland -- Actor and activist Danny Glover called on Academy Awards nominees and others in the film industry to not wear Hugo Boss suits at the March 7 awards ceremony.

The "Lethal Weapon" star, in collaboration with the Workers United labor union, made the request in a letter on behalf of 375 Cleveland-area factory workers who'll lose their jobs if the German company closes the plant at the end of next month as planned.

The Feb. 26 letter asked Hollywood to "take a small stand for American workers." It asked Oscars attendees to wear on their lapels a pin reading, "Keep the Hugo Boss Plant Open."

Workers United, which represents most of the plant's employees, said the plant is profitable and the company is shutting it because it can make clothing more cheaply in Europe.

Hugo Boss AG, based in Metzingen, Germany, said the plant is under capacity and isn't globally competitive.

Knife found taped
under courtroom table

Cleveland -- Authorities say they found a switchblade knife taped beneath a Cleveland courtroom table where a man charged with murder was seated during his trial.

Cuyahoga County sheriff's spokesman John O'Brien says a deputy noticed Joaquin Hicks fidgeting under the table March 5 when he was brought into Common Pleas Court.

O'Brien says the deputy discovered the blade and the courtroom was immediately cleared out. No one was injured.

Hicks is charged with aggravated murder, kidnapping, aggravated robbery and attempted murder in the shootings of two workers at a park in downtown Cleveland.

O'Brien says authorities don't know how the blade made it inside the courtroom.

Patrol: Trooper going
too fast in fatal crash

Carey -- The State Highway Patrol says an Ohio trooper killed in a crash while on duty was driving too fast when his cruiser went off a road and rolled several times.

Investigators say the trooper, who had just graduated from the highway patrol academy in December, was going 116 mph before the accident in early February.

Trooper Andrew Baldridge, 25, died in the crash just outside Carey in northwest Ohio. A training officer who was riding with him was injured.

He was responding to a backup request from a sheriff's deputy who was searching through a home where vagrants were suspected to be living.

And baby makes 3 -- on couple's wedding day

Sylvania -- A woman taken to a maternity ward in her wedding dress become a newlywed and a new mom on the same day.

Jamie Phillips says she felt contractions while her father walked her down the aisle during her wedding ceremony Feb. 27 in Toledo, but she thought it was a false alarm.

It wasn't until after her water broke at the reception that she was rushed to a hospital.

The son who was born, Tova Phillips, wasn't due until March 7.

His mother and her new husband, Mark Phillips, didn't think the baby would come quite so soon when they planned the wedding two weeks earlier.

Both parents say they wanted to "do the right thing" and get married before the baby's arrival, which is why they cut things so close.
