Police News: Police say passenger was carrying nearly $1,600 worth of marijuanaMarch 10, 2010
Macedonia -- A Sagamore Hills man did not enter a plea to a drug trafficking charge March 1 after police said they caught him with about 1.8 ounces of marijuana, valued at nearly $1,600, during a traffic stop the night before. According to Stow Municipal Court records, the 18-year-old man did plead not guilty to two counts of drug paraphernalia possession and one count of marijuana possession. He was scheduled for a March 9 preliminary hearing. Police also charged a 19-year-old Preserve Lane man, who was driving the car, with driving under suspension and driving without headlights on. According to the Macedonia Mayor's Court clerk's office, the man did not enter a plea at his March 4 arraignment, which was scheduled for an April 15 continuance. Police said they stopped the car on Route 8 about 8:15 p.m. when they saw it did not have its headlights on. While speaking with the driver, police said they smelled marijuana and later determined the odor was coming from the Sagamore Hills man. Police also said they suspected marijuana on the man's lap, shirt and jacket. Police said they found 14 plastic bags, each containing a small amount of a substance that later tested positive as marijuana, in the man's jacket pocket, plus a plastic tube containing a small amount of marijuana under his seat in the car. Police said they also found empty plastic bags and a small scale on the man. The Sagamore Hills man was released from Macedonia City Jail on a personal bond March 1. The Preserve Lane man was released from the city jail Feb. 28 on a $525 bond. Marijuana found March 2. Store employee finds marijuana: An employee of a Macedonia Commons Boulevard store reported finding a plastic bag containing a small amount of marijuana on the floor in the store's shoe department. Police said they took the marijuana and later destroyed it. Property damage Feb. 27. House struck by paintballs: An Iroquois Run man reported someone shot the back of his home nine times with paintballs, causing unspecified damage, in the previous two weeks. Theft Feb. 26. Cell phone stolen from locker: A woman reported someone took her cell from an unlocked locker at the Macedonia Family Recreation Center while she was swimming in the early evening. Feb. 23. Video game taken: An employee of a Route 82 store reported someone took a $60 video game from the store without paying for it. The employee said that while looking at store security video a short time after the incident, he saw a man put the game into his jacket pocket and leave the store. Attempted fraud Feb. 23. Man reports suspicious phone call: A Melody Lane man reported someone called and told him he had won $2.5 million in a sweepstakes, but he had to wire $1,000 to someone in Michigan to receive his prize. The man said he did not send the money. -- Northfield Center -- Theft March 6. Woman says money stolen from home: A Cherry Lane woman reported someone took $325 from her home in the previous two days. The Summit County Sheriff's Office says it is investigating, but there was no sign of forced entry and the woman did not know who might have taken the money. Harassment March 5. Woman says man threatened her: A township woman reported a man called her and tried to sell an unspecified item to her. When the woman declined, she said, the man became angry, made obscene comments, then threatened her before hanging up. The Summit County Sheriff's Office said it has determined the call was routed through Jamaica and they are investigating. Marijuana possession March 2. Man charged during traffic stop: Police charged a 19-year-old Akron man with minor misdemeanor marijuana possession after they stopped him on Route 8 at 11:15 p.m. for having a cracked windshield. A Summit County Sheriff's deputy said that while speaking with the man, he saw a marijuana cigarette in the vehicle's ash tray.
