The Akron Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society -- also known as the Akron Derbytown Chorus -- is hosting its 63rd annual show, "That Old Gang of Mine," on March 19 and 20. Both shows begin at 7:30 p.m. The performances are at Cuyahoga Falls High School's spacious theater and are open to the public. Parking is free. Our Town, the show headliner, features men with championship ranking in the Barbershop Harmony Society and a cappella circles. Our Town won the prestigious Harmony Sweepstakes (America's oldest a cappella competition) and Barbershop Harmony Society Northeastern Districts' competition in 2008. Bustin' Loose, another show headliner, features a past international champion tenor and three other members who have sung with acclaim. The quartet in 1984 won the extremely competitive Johnny Appleseed District award, one of only 16 U.S. districts. For eight successive years the group sang together, then went separate ways until regrouping late last decade. The show's master of ceremonies, Tom Gentry, is an international barbershop performer, past music category specialist for the Barbershop Harmony Society and a music arranger for more than 40 years. Gentry's wonderful wit, vibrant personality and warm heart make him a unique talent and highly engaging emcee. Gentry is also a sought-after musical arranger and has coached and judged barbershop events worldwide. As always, the full membership of the Akron Derbytown Chorus will take the stage singing traditional barbershop harmony. In addition, the newly formed Gospel Chorus, organized to sing gospel songs in the barbershop style, will be introduced. Ticket prices are $18 for adults, $5 for those 6 to 18 years old, and children 5 and under are free when accompanied by someone with a paid ticket. For groups of 10 or more, tickets are $15 each. Cuyahoga Falls High School is at 2300 4th Street in Cuyahoga Falls. For tickets and information, call 330-958-2729 or e-mail wilveith@hotmail.com.
