by Jeff Saunders Reporter Northfield Village -- Athena's Restaurant Equipment and Supply caters to the restaurant business, but the regular consumer could benefit as well. "We have new and used equipment, but we also sell to the public," said Krista Mihalek, a partner in the business. "Anyone can buy. If you're having a party, you can buy [supplies] in bulk." Athena's opened for business July 9 at 10211 Northfield Road, between Wing Warehouse and the Goodwill store, and celebrated with a three-hour grand opening party July 15. Mihalek's parents, Sandy Mihalek and Sam Tsoumas, are also partners. The facility with around a dozen employees, has about 3,500 square feet, including a front showroom, a warehouse and a back room, where used equipment can be cleaned in preparation for refurbishment. A large variety of equipment is available, such as ranges, burners, fryers, griddles, charbroilers, coolers and freezers, microwaves, and meat slicers, all specifically for restaurant use. Also available are tables and chairs, mainly for restaurants, but Sandy Mihalek said the general public can purchase them, too. "I've had people say. 'We would love to put a booth in our home,'" she said. Sandy Mihalek said a major part of Athena's business is recycling equipment, much of which is sold via a Web site. Items are brought in, evaluated primarily by technician Carlos Miranda, who then takes apart items deemed savable, cleans, and rebuilds them. "It's instead of things going to a landfill," said Mihalek. Sandy Mihalek and her husband have a history in the area restaurant business, with their current venture, the Dolphin Family Restaurant, nearby. "He has over 20 years of restaurant experience so he can consult with restaurants," said Krista of her father. Mayor Victor Milani, who attended the grand opening, said he has faith Athena's will be a success. "Everything this family has touched has turned to gold," he said.
