North Summit County -- Macedonia resident Leona Jackson and Twinsburg resident Barbara Baumgartner joined 119 other choristers from 20 countries on a 16-day choral tour of India in June.

Over the last 16 years, the "Voices of Bahá" tour brought 1,200 singers and musicians to 30 countries. They sang in some of the most prestigious concert halls and recorded with leading orchestras. Most choir members are followers of the Bahá'í Faith and strive through music to uplift the spirits of audiences and promote the ideals of world peace and oneness of mankind.

The 2010 "Voices of Bahá" tour included concerts in India's leading hall, the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai, and other venues in Lucknow and New Delhi.

They visited Agra and sang and recorded in the Bahá'í House of Worship in New Delhi, an architecturally-stunning lotus-shaped temple that attracts 70 million visitors per year.

During the tour, they sang sacred music mostly in English, Ravi Shankar compositions blending western choral elements with classic Indian vocal melodies in Hindi, as well as selections in African, Chinese, Hindi, Spanish and Persian. The tour spanned June 11 to 27 and included sightseeing and visits to Bahá'í centers.

On prior tours, the "Voices of Bahá" performed for audiences in Carnegie Hall, the Mozart Concert House in Vienna, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow and dozens of other venues on four continents.

They participated in international choral festivals and won a Gold Prize at the Johannes Brahms International Choir Competition in Germany.

The Bahá'í Faith is the youngest of the world's independent monotheistic religions and one of the fastest-growing with a significant presence throughout the United States.

Bahá'ís view the world's major religions as part of a single, progressive process through which God reveals His will to humanity. Major Bahá'í tenets include the oneness of humanity, equality of men and women, eradication of prejudice, harmony of science and religion, universal education and world peace.
