Northfield Center -- After a Northfield Avenue man drove off Olde Eight road, struck several rocks and suffered a head injury July 24, the Summit County Sheriff's Office charged him with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

According to a police report, the Northfield Center Fire Department took the man to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. The hospital reported July 26 that the man was treated and released.

The man was also charged with failure to control, a fourth-degree misdemeanor, and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle and not wearing a seat belt, both minor misdemeanors.

The report said the man drove his pickup truck off the road at about 1:40 a.m., struck the rocks and a mailbox and was partially ejected through the passenger side door, leaving blood on the side mirror. The truck was "wrecked," the report stated, and sheriff's deputies smelled a strong odor of alcohol from the man and his eyes were bloodshot and watery.

The report said the man was given a summons at the hospital to appear in Stow Municipal Court.
