Police News: Sharp-eyed neighbor spots alleged mower theft in progress

Macedonia -- A Cleveland man is facing several felony charges after he allegedly was seen driving away from a Berkshire Drive home with a stolen lawn mower in the bed of his pickup truck July 24.

According to Stow Municipal Court records, the man did not enter a plea at his July 26 arraignment to one count each of theft, breaking and entering and possessing criminal tools, all fifth-degree felonies.

According to a police report, a resident reported seeing a pickup leaving her neighbor's driveway with the mower in back traveling east at a high rate of speed before turning north onto Shepard Road around 6:15 a.m.

Police alerted surrounding departments with a description of the truck and Northfield Village police stopped it on Ledge Road in front of Lee Eaton Elementary School.

Village police they turned the driver over to Macedonia police.

City police said they returned the lawn mower to the owner.

Police said they determined that a tool was used to pry a locked shed door open.

According to Stow Municipal Court records, the man was released July 27 on a 10 percent, $50,000 bond.

Theft

July 29. Woman reports fraudulent purchase: A city woman reported discovering that someone charged a $340 purchase at a St. Louis business against her checking account. The woman said a second $220 purchase at the same business was attempted, but it was denied because of insufficient funds in the account. Police said the woman's bank is investigating.

July 26. Man reported credit card charges: A city man reported someone charged $177 in purchases against his credit card account. The man said the card's provider requested he file a police report.

Property damage

July 24. Vehicle driven across lawn: A Starlight Drive woman reported someone drove across her front lawn during the night. According to a police report, there was "moderate turf damage."

July 22. Window forced open: A real estate agent reported someone forced open a basement window of a vacant Berkshire Drive home during the night. The agent said there was no other damage and nothing was missing from the home.

Attempted fraud

July 22. Fake check reported: An employee of a Macedonia Commons Boulevard store reported a man tried to cash a $976 check that store employees determined was fake after they discovered it was issued by a nonexistent Pittsburgh bank.

The employee said the man left the store without the check or any money. Police said they are investigating.

Driving under suspension

Aug. 1. Man stopped on Ledge Road: Police charged a Sagamore Hills man, 22, with driving under suspension after a computer check of his license plate around 12:15 a.m. showed his driver's license was suspended. The man was given a Northfield Village Mayor's Court date and released on a personal bond.

Operating a vehicle under the influence

July 30. Police believed vehicle disabled: Police charged a 43-year-old Sagamore Road man with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and having a blood alcohol content over the legal limit after they saw his vehicle stopped on Lowrie Boulevard at Route 8 at about 12:40 a.m. Police said they initially believed the vehicle might be disabled.

Police said the man did poorly on field sobriety tests. He was given a Northfield Village Mayor's Court date and released on a 10 percent of $500 bond.

Arrest warrant

July 25. Man turned over by Lakewood police: Lakewood police reported they had in custody a Cleveland man, 45, wanted by Northfield Village Mayor's Court for failing to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge. The man was given a mayor's court date and released on a personal bond.

Vehicle theft

July 24. Pickup truck reported stolen: A man and woman reported someone took their locked 1997 pickup truck while it was in the Northfield Park parking lot late in the evening. Police said they are investigating.
