'Ride for the Hills' rolls out on Sunday

Benefitting the Partners With Youth Scholarship Fund, the Nordonia Hills "Ride for the Hills" YMCA motorcycle run is scheduled for Aug. 8.

Mark your calendars for the second annual event at Northfield Park race track. Register on ride day from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., or pre-register online using the link on the branch calendar on the Nordonia Hills Branch website, which can be found via www.akronymca.org.

The cost is $10 per rider, $5 per passenger fee.

The 40- to 50-mile escorted ride will start and finish at Northfield Park. Post ride festivities include prizes, food and merchandise vendors and more. A special, live performance of the Kannibal Kings will entertain you from 12:30 to 4 p.m.

Each rider/passenger has an opportunity to win a fabulous Harley-Davidson quilt, hand crafted by Mike Holodnak, owner of Memory Lane Quilting in Sagamore Square Shopping Plaza.

Join Teen Leaders Club adult steering committee

Nordonia Hills YMCA Teen Leaders Club is a volunteer program for teens in seventh through 12th grade. Grades 5 and 6 are also welcome.

The focus of the group is community service, social development, leadership training, team building and fun. All members play an active role in the club and are responsible for achieving personal growth through goals defined by each teen and the club. At this time, any interested adult volunteer with a strong desire to effect the lives of teens through volunteerism and club activities, please plan to attend one of two steering committee round-up meetings. Meetings take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on August 5 and Aug. 12. Please contact Lisa lisag@akronymca.org to R.S.V.P. for the call to action meetings.

Fall open house coming Aug. 17

On Aug. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. the YMCA is holding an open house for families of children enrolled or those searching for the right child care provider of preschool (ages 3 to 5) and school age child care (kindergarten to grade 6). Contact Lisa or Wendy at 330-467-8366 for additional information.

The itinerary includes

* 6 p.m. -- Welcome.

6:15 to 7 p.m. -- Meet your child's teacher/child care counselor and visit our classrooms.

* 7 to 7:45 p.m. -- Parent meeting to review policies and procedures.

* 7:45 to 8 p.m. -- Registration and questions and answers.

Punch and cookies will be served.

Placement available for Fall Preschool

Make a "Y's choice" for your 3, 4, or 5-year-old.

Preschool and pre-kindergarten classes begin Sept. 7, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost of five-day program is $250 per month. A two-day rate is available upon request. Weekly child care is also available from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at a cost of $170 per week, which includes the core preschool program.

Our programs are designed to encourage a positive, nurturing, motivating and fun learning atmosphere, work with you and your family in a professional curriculum and focus on the development of the child physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. Learn through hands-on activities and peer interaction.

Enroll in baton twirling and cheer camp

Students in kindergarten through high school can join in this opportunity to learn new skills or enhance previous twirling and cheer skills Aug. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The camp fee is $50.

Batons and poms will be available to borrow. Batons may also be purchased through the instructor. Tennis shoes and shorts (or sweat pants) are required. Please bring a water bottle and a packed lunch.

Enrollment is available online through the branch website, or stop in the YMCA from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday to register.

Summer day camp is fun

Sign your child up for the final two weeks of camp.

Themes are:

* Mad Scientist on Aug. 9 to 13 includes trips to the International Woman's Air and Space Museum and Great Lakes Science Center.

* Final Fling on Aug. 16 to 20 includes a special end-of-camp party.

Camp begins every Monday to Friday at 9 a.m. and concludes at 4 p.m. Weekly fee is $150 per child ages 5 to 12 and $170 for preschoolers.

Free extended care is available between 6:30 and 9 a.m. and from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The weekly fee includes the cost of field trips, activities, afternoon snack, and water bottle.

Other weekly activities include swimming, hiking, games, crafts, and more. Registration packets are available for pick up at the branch or online at akronymca.org/AdventureDayCamp.aspx.
