Although the Nordonia High School girls golf team has played fairly well at the start of the 2010 season, the Knights have still found the going to be rough.

On Aug. 9, Nordonia opened the campaign at the Gleneagles Invitational. There were six schools at the event, and the Knights finished in fourth place with a score of 384.

Solon ran off with the tournament, shooting a team score of 353. Stow, meanwhile, was second with a 373, and Revere finished third with a 383.

Senior Gina Battistone led Nordonia, shooting an 83.

The following day, the Knights battled both Revere and Poland in a non-conference tri-match at Mill Creek Park Golf Club in Youngstown.

Nordonia shot a respectable round of 179, but the Knights lost to both opponents. That's because Poland shot a 175 and Revere carded a 177.

Battistone led the way for the Knights again, this time posting a score of 40.

On Aug. 11, Nordonia competed in the Warren JFK Tournament. The Knights played extremely well, setting a new school record for an 18-hole tournament. Nordonia finished with a team score of 355. That was good enough for 11th place in a field of 25 squads.

Battistone was at the forefront of the Knights' attack with a round of 79. Senior Lauren Walsh was next with an 88, seniors Mya Williams and Ashley Costello both carded a 94 and senior Meghan O'Neill posted a 97.

"We played very well that day," said Nordonia head coach Scott Lawrence. "All five of our rounds were under 100, and I'm not even sure that we did that at all last season."

On Aug. 13, the Knights competed in the Northeast Ohio Conference Preseason Tournament at Bunker Hill Golf Club in Medina.

There are 11 schools that participate in the sport of girls golf in the NOC, but future NOC member Mentor was invited as the 12th school.

Ultimately, Nordonia finished seventh overall with a team score of 380.

Battistone paced the Knights with an 81.

"It was a little bit of a different golf course, and the girls had never played there before," said Lawrence. "Going into the tournament, our expectations were to use it exactly for what it was -- a preseason tournament. It was a different layout with a couple of tricky holes. We were pleased with what we shot, although we would have liked to finish higher."

Nordonia now sports an overall record of 0-2.

"By the end of the week, the girls were really tired," said Lawrence. "You could see that they were dragging, with the heat and the schedule. It was an eye opener for us, too. We're shooting pretty good scores, but they're not translating into the results that we want."

On Aug. 17, the Knights were set to play the Magnificat Invitational at Sweetbriar Golf Club, but results were not available at press time.

On Aug. 21, they'll compete in Midwest Classic at Skyland Pines Golf Course.
