After winning a piece of the Northeast Ohio Conference Lake Division championship a year ago, the Nordonia High School girls tennis team is looking to repeat in 2010.

Nordonia finished the 2009 campaign with an overall record of 8-6. The Knights also shared the Lake Division championship with Twinsburg.

Nordonia was undefeated in division action with a ledger of 5-0, and the Knights placed second in the NOC Tournament behind the Tigers.

Nordonia lost a lot of experience to graduation from that team, six seniors, as a matter of fact. Those six were April Porter, Keisha Baynard, Bridget Blaha, Marisa Mariglotta, Liz Wiggington and Kyle Fenn.

However, the Knights do have a pair of experienced seniors this year. They are singles players Alyson Kavan and Kaylie Marr.

There are three other seniors on the squad, as well. That trio includes Karly Huml, Alyssa Ahrens and Stacy Danczak.

There's also a junior on the roster, Tori Coneglio, in addition to two sophomores -- Sammi Miroglotta and Olivia Coffman.

"We don't have a set lineup yet," said Nordonia head coach Ryan Vehar. "We do have a lineup for Wednesday, though, with Alyson at first singles and Kaylie at second singles, and the three other seniors playing doubles for sure. We'll have to rotate a little bit. We have eight girls for seven positions."

Despite losing six seniors, Vehar is optimistic about the upcoming season and the potential that the Knights possess.

"We've got five seniors and a few sophomores who are going to play quite a bit," said Vehar. "We also have another six girls playing JV right now, so we have a lot of girls.

"I don't think we lost anything from last season. We've got girls who can step right in and pick up where last year's team left off."

As far as goals are concerned, Vehar indicated that repeating as division champion is definitely one of them.

"Twinsburg, Lakewood and Brush will all be strong," he said. "I know Twinsburg lost a lot of seniors, too, but they'll be tough. I definitely think we can contend for it [the title]."

Vehar is starting his sixth season as the girls head tennis coach at Nordonia. Vehar's assistant this year is Corey Hatfield.

The Knights open the new season Aug. 18 on the road against non-division foe Ravenna. On Aug. 19 and 21, they'll compete in the Lakewood Doubles Tournament.
