Police News: Man charged after allegedly choking village man during fight

Northfield Village -- Police charged a Mayfield Heights man with second-degree felony assault after his wife reported he allegedly choked a village man into unconsciousness during a fight at the village man's home Aug. 19.

Police said the village man was conscious and standing when they arrived at a little after 8 p.m. and arrested the Mayfield Heights man, 31.

Police said the village man's mouth was bleeding and he had several bruises on his face, but did not remember being choked. The wife had a swollen bruise on her right temple, police said. Police said the village fire department was not called to treat the village man and the women, but they did not have any other information. No injuries to the Mayfield Heights man were reported.

According to a police report, the wife said her husband came to the home and she and the village man confronted him in the front yard. She said the two men got into a fight and her husband punched her in the face when she tried to separate them. She said her husband then forced the village man to the ground and choked him until he was unconscious.

The wife said she was able to pull her husband off the village man.

The husband then tried to leave but his vehicle would not start.

According to Stow Municipal Court records, the Mayfield Heights man did not enter a plea to the charge at his Aug. 20 arraignment and pleaded not guilty to first-degree misdemeanor domestic violence and fourth-degree misdemeanor trespassing. He was being held in Summit County Jail on a 10 percent of $200,000 bond as of Aug. 23.

Property damage

Aug. 21. Vehicle struck in parking lot: A woman reported someone struck her sport utility vehicle, causing moderate damage to the brake light and rear quarter panel, while it was in the parking lot of a Route 8 store for about an hour in the early afternoon.

Aug. 12. Paint balls hit house: A Vincent Avenue man reported someone struck the rear of his home with several paint balls during the day. The man said he saw at least two people running away through the nearby woods, but was unable to tell who they were.

Hit and run

Aug. 19. Women's car struck by truck: A woman reported that a large truck struck the passenger side of her car while she was driving north on Route 8, just north of Olde Eight Road, at about 10:30 a.m.

Police said the woman was uninjured. The woman said the truck continued north and police said they were unable to find it.

The car sustained damage to its passenger side door and the side mirror was torn off, police said.

Arrest warrants

Aug. 17. Cuyahoga County Jail turns man over: Cuyahoga County Jail reported it had in custody a Cleveland man, 49, wanted by Northfield Village Mayor's Court for failing to appear in court on an alleged traffic violation. The man was given a mayor's court date and released on a personal bond.

Aug. 12. Police recognize man: Police arrested a Maple Heights man, 24, wanted by Northfield Village Mayor's Court for failing to pay a fine on an operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol charge.

A village police officer recognized him driving in the parking lot of a Route 8 business at about 6 p.m. and stopped him. The man was given a mayor's court date and released on a $300 bond.

Aug. 12. Woman arrested when she pays fine: Police arrested a 31-year-old Twinsburg woman, wanted by the Northfield Village Mayor's Court for failing to appear in court on a traffic violation after she came to the Village Hall to pay a fine on another traffic violation. The woman was given a mayor's court date and released on a $150 bond.

Driving under suspension

Aug. 16. Woman on motorcycle charged: Police charged a Cuyahoga Falls woman, 29, with driving under suspension after they determined through a random computer check of her license plate number that her driver's license was suspended and they stopped her on Route 8 at about 1 p.m. The woman was given a Northfield Village Mayor's Court date and released on a $50 bond.

Operating a vehicle
under the influence

Aug. 8. Man stopped on Route 8: Police charged a 51-year-old Cleveland man with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol after they saw him weaving while driving on Route 8 at about 2 a.m. The man was given a Northfield Village Mayor's Court date and released on a personal bond.

Property damage

Aug. 17. Car window smashed: A Northfield Elementary School custodian reported someone threw a rock and broke his car's rear window while it was in the school's parking lot in the afternoon and evening.

Disorderly conduct

Aug. 16. Man allegedly intoxicated at store: The Summit County Sheriff's Office cited a 63-year-old Valley View Road man with minor misdemeanor disorderly conduct after two women reported he was behaving as if he were intoxicated in a Golden Link Boulevard store and in the store's parking lot.

According to a police report, the man admitted to drinking alcohol before coming to the store. The man was given a summons into Stow Municipal Court and released.
