Macedonia -- Ledge Acres Road in Macedonia was closed to traffic for about two and a half hours late Thursday while the Macedonia Fire Department dealt with a house fire that caused about $40,000 damage to a single-family home.

Firefighters were called to 9371 Ledge Acres Road just before 11 p.m. Aug. 19 for a kitchen fire. The only injury reported was a Macedonia firefighter who was treated and released at Sagamore Medical Center for a small finger laceration from cutting his finger on some glass from a window.

The homeowner, who was outside when firefighters arrived, had been the only person in the house. She had been sleeping when she heard a noise, got up to investigate and discovered the fire.

Lt. Paul Celinski said the homeowner reported she did not know the source of the noise that woke her up, but said her smoke detectors had not gone off in the initial stage of the fire.

"She heard the loud noise and she did have working smoke detectors, but there was no smoke in the first part of the fire," Celinski said, adding the alarms were all going off when firefighters arrived.

Firefighters saw smoke coming from the roof vents and the soffit of the single-family home.

Celinski said the fire had burned through a wall in the kitchen and started to burn into the home's attic.

The crew extinguished the fire about 14 minutes after the initial call, Celinski said.

Three other area fire departments provided mutual aid: Boston Heights with four firefighters on an engine, Northfield Village with four firefighters on an engine and Northfield Center with two firefighters on a rescue squad.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and estimated damage is approximately $40,000.

The American Red Cross of Summit and Portage Counties helped the homeowner find a place to stay for the night, according to the fire department.
