by Jeff Saunders Reporter Nordonia Hills -- As about 50 family, friends and co-workers watched, Darlene D. Jones was sworn in as the new Northfield postmaster at the Sagamore Hills Township Hall Aug. 20. Jones is the 21st person to fill that post since 1837. "This is a golden moment," Jones told the audience. She has been serving as interim postmaster since August 2009. She is a resident of Cleveland Heights and has worked for the U.S. Postal Service since 1983, when she began working as a flat sorting machine operator in Columbus. She has worked in a number of positions, including management, primarily in Northeast Ohio offices. Among several guest speakers was Ohio District 11 U.S. Rep. Marcia L. Fudge (D-Warrensville Heights), a cousin of Jones'. "[The family] didn't know what was going on, all of a sudden she's postmaster," said Fudge, adding "We're very proud of her." Rose Spraggins, postmaster in Columbus, said she has known Jones since Spraggins was manager and Jones acting supervisor at the post office in Lakewood. "Darlene is a perfectionist," said Spraggins. "She's someone who expects nothing less from herself and her employees." While talking about her high standards, Jones read a poem by an unknown author, the last lines of which were, "Give the world the best you've got, and you might get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you've got anyway." E-mail: jsaunders@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3169 Comments
