South Point Hospital is offering several free programs for residents during upcoming weeks at its various area facilities. Free health screenings * Blood pressure screening. Walk-ins only. Questions? Call 216-491-6690. Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. at South Pointe Hospital, Community Health Resource Center, Building A, 4180 Warrensville Center Road in Warrensville Heights. Use Driveway No. 2. * Hearing screening by a licensed audiologist. Participants will get a chance to view the inside of their ear, including the eardrum, canal and cerumen/wax through a video otoscope. Appointment only by calling 216-692-8760. Screenings are Tuesdays, Sept. 7 and Oct. 12 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Macedonia Family Recreation Center, 1494 East Aurora Road in Macedonia. * Healthy heart screening determines cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure levels. No fasting required. Results will be explained by a registered nurse. Walk-ins only. Call 216-491-6425 for questions. Screenings are Sept. 11 from 1 to 4 p.m., Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Oct. 10 from noon to 3 p.m. at The Market Place at Summit Plaza, 10333 Northfield Road in Northfield Village. The Sept. 24 screening event will include a senior information fair. Community events planned * Sagamore Spooktacular will be Oct. 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Sagamore Hills Medical Center, 863 West Aurora Road in Sagamore Hills. There will be trick-or-treating, a teddy bear clinic, pony rides, fire trucks, ambulances, giveaways, health screenings for adults and more. There will be free parking and shuttle from Marc's in the Sagamore Square shopping center. * Diabetes Heath Fair: November is National Diabetes Month and South Pointe will mark the month with a diabetes health fair Nov. 12 from 2 to 5 p.m. in Warrensville Heights. The free event will include a physician panel discussion, diabetes medication update, special session with diabetes patients, cooking and exercise demos. Plus specialty info tables. There will also be free health screenings for feet, glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol. No appointment needed. The fair will be at South Pointe Hospital, Building B,20000 Harvard Road in Warrensville Heights * Blood drives set for Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. One donor will win a free iPod Touch (value $200) at each drive this summer. The American Red Cross is also raffling a car. Appointments are accepted by calling 1-800-GIVE-LIFE The Aug. 31 drive will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Signature of Solon, Grand Ballroom, 39000 Signature Drive. The Sept 1 drive will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at South Pointe's Corporate College East, 4400 Richmond Road in Warrensville Heights. The main entrance is across from BJ's Club. Health talks/events offered * How Sweet Is Too Sweet? Viera Bernat, MD, Board-certified, Family Medicine and Brooke Perlik, PA-C, RD, LD, Physician Assistant, Dietitian will speak. More than 20.8 million children and adults in the U.S. have diabetes, and nearly one-third of them (6.2 million) do not know it. Often diabetes goes undiagnosed because many of its symptoms seem so harmless. Learn about prevention, risk factors and treatments. Blood pressure screenings will be available. The event is Aug. 25 at the Twinsburg Community Center, 10260 Ravenna Road in Twinsburg. Blood pressure screenings will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m., with lunch at 11:30 a.m. The lecture will be at noon. The event is free. Lunch is sponsored by Walton Manor Healthcare Center, a Saber Healthcare Group Facility. Space is limited. There will be entertainment, activities, fitness demonstrations, health screenings and more. All activities promote the importance of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. The event is Aug. 27. A Healthwise Connection "Lunch and Learn" event featuring Rachel Kabb-Effron, Esq., Certified elder law attorney with the Kabb Law Firm. Growing more mature gets more puzzling every day. Kabb-Efron will discuss the 10 secrets of how to get through the aging process with your finances and dignity intact. The event is free, but seating is limited. The event is scheduled for Aug. 30. Lunch is at noon, followed by the lecture at 12:30 p.m. This event is at the Aurora Senior Center, Walker Building, 129 W. Pioneer Trail in Aurora.
