Two artists joined creative forces to create "Fire and Ice" at the BOX gallery in Akron.

The exhibit, which opened Aug. 14 and is open through Sept. 18, was several months in the making, said Cuyahoga Falls artist Karen Pierson. Pierson said the majority of the pieces in the exhibit are new, and created by her and Barberton artist Terry Klausman for this show. The work includes art jewelry and mixed media wall hangings, with either fiery reds, oranges, yellows and warm browns, and blues, grays and whites predominating, in keeping with the theme.

Pierson said the collaboration between her and Klausman included sharing materials.

"It doesn't look like two artists who are just sharing a room, but two artists who collaborated together," she said. "I think ours hangs well as a collaborative exhibit."

Pierson's specialty is creating artistic jewelry, including the bracelets, tiaras and broaches found at the exhibit. She said she often combines the two; for example, creating a broach that fits with a wall hanging.

"When you want to wear it, you can take it off the wall mounting," she said. "Otherwise it's on display for all to see and appreciate, rather than being hidden away in a jewelry box somewhere, which is such a waste."

Art is a full-time profession for Pierson, she said.

"I sold my first painting when I was 12," she said. "I was hooked."

Pierson said she is planning another collaborative exhibit sometime in the fall, this time making pieces to go with a photographer's pictures.

"I am compelled to create art every day," she said. "My brain never shuts off. I always have sought out ways to do things."

Pierson is married with two adult children, "who are artists in their own right."

"They got the same gene," she said.
