For a holiday that many think of as a last chance to barbecue before summer ends, Labor Day has a lot of history behind it. The Labor Day observance was borne out of a 1894 conflict between workers and federal troops in Illinois which resulted in a number of deaths. The holiday has come to represent the recognition of the labor movement, and it's dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers -- an annual tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of this country. And that recognition is perhaps more important than ever. Many are struggling to find jobs, and those who are employed are working harder these days. It's inspiring to see the sense of optimism and forward-thinking with which Americans are meeting the formidable challenges. Traditionally, Labor Day marks the end of summer, and in our neck of the woods, Labor Day represents the last chance for outdoor picnics, parties and revelry before cooler weather sends us indoors. In Northeast Ohio, there are many activities to enjoy that have become synonymous with Labor Day weekend, including the Cleveland National Air Show and A Taste of Cleveland, and closer to home, A Taste of Hudson and the Western Reserve Academy Antiques Festival. Other area events include Rock the Lock at Lock 3 in Akron, Concert on the Square in Cuyahoga Falls and the Riverfront Cruise-in, also in the Falls. No matter how you recognize the day, it's your day, so enjoy it. You've earned it! Comments
