The Nordonia High School boys golf team was bit by the "bogey bug" last week.

Actually, the "double-bogey bug" might be more accurate.

On Aug. 24, Nordonia competed in the Hudson Invitational at Hudson Country Club. The Knights finished 13th in a field of 16 teams.

According to Nordonia head coach Keith Obly, it was a sub-par day for everyone on the squad, as none of his players were able to shoot below 80.

"Double-bogeys just shot us down," said Obly. "Overall, there were a lot of things going on, with school starting and everything else, but it was the double bogeys that hurt us."

On Aug. 26, Nordonia battled Solon at Grantwood Golf Club. The Knights fell to the Comets by the score of 158-154.

Senior Devon Goldberg led the way for the Knights with a 38, while senior Charlie Luthanen was next with a 39.

Once again, a flurry of double-bogeys hurt Nordonia.

"If we had regular bogeys instead of double-bogeys, we would have shot a 149," said Obly. "You can't go out there and shoot double-bogeys at the varsity level and expect to win."

The next day, the Knights traveled to the Two Club in Macedonia to work with trainer Rick Zizjak on their putting.

The loss to Solon was Nordonia's first regular match of the season. The Knights are now 0-1.

After a hot start to the 2010 campaign, Nordonia cooled off last week. Obly is hopeful that the Knights can get back on the right track and continue moving in a positive direction.

"Overall, it was just poor course management," he said. "We weren't focused on what we had to do. They're all much better players than that. They were getting beat when they know they shouldn't, but I'm sure they'll bring things back together."

On Aug. 31, Nordonia was set to face Hudson at Ellsworth Meadows Golf Club, but results weren't available at press time.

On Sept. 2, the Knights are scheduled to clash with Stow at Fox Den Golf Club.
